This week on People Profile: Bridgette Thompson (NYPD)
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Department is committed to accomplishing its mission to protect the lives and property of all citizens of New York City by treating every citizen with courtesy, professionalism, and respect, and to enforce the laws impartially, fighting crime both through deterrence and the relentless pursuit of criminals.
According to William J. Bratton (Police Commissioner, City of New York),
“Many residents in the communities most directly affected by the dramatic crime reductions of the past two decades feel that those reductions have been achieved at their expense. The NYPD will be working with these citizens in a new partnership, built on mutual respect and an appreciation for shared responsibility, to make every neighborhood safe from crime, fear, and disorder”.
It is therefore our privilege to have in our presence a member of the Famed NYPD Miss Bridgette Thompson.

Dr.C
Welcome to People Profile Bridgette, how are you?

Bridgette Thompson
I am doing great Dr.C, i must admit that i am a bit apprehensive in doing this interview and must tell you that questions dealing with the department are out of bounds and therefore cannot be answered. Questions about me are welcome. Nonetheless, it is indeed a pleasure speaking with you as i have been reading your posts and found them very interesting and relevant.

Dr.C
Thank you very much for your forthrightness Bridgette, could you share with us who is Bridgette Thompson?

Bridgette Thompson
I am a mother of 2 men ages 24 and 21. I migrated to the united states april 1989 at the age 17. I am kind hearted, very sensitive, humorous and full of energy which i am often told. Some of my friends labeled me as a trouble maker..lol.
My first job was at the A&P supermarket as a cashier in 1989. I wonder if A&P still around. I received a GED diploma in 1991 and went to Borough Community College for eighteen months studying early childhood education. Then transferred to Long Island University and graduated with a Bachelors Of Science degree in Computer Science of May 2000. I was employed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the IT department as Junior Network Technician . I loved working there. I am always amazed how a simple checking of the outlet and pressing the power button can make a computer work. I loved that job as it provides much needed job security. However after the tragedies of 9/11, i was laid off as that company was having financial problems.

Dr.C
The tragedies of 911 affects us all. Why did you went to work in the police department?

Bridgette Thompson
I was depressed for awhile because when you think you are moving forward, but in reality you are moving backwards then that’s a problem. I think that could be my deciding moment, one of failure or opportunity. I was employed by a security company called HWA inc as an unarmed security officer. Working in the Social Security office, i was so opened to the public especially the emotionally disturbed people while the workers were protected by a bullet proof window. So i remember Mrs Winifred telling me couple years ago to join NYPD as there were so many opportunities, good pension and job security. I looked into my life and i said, “Bridgette you are not getting any younger”, lol. So on my way home i stopped by my local precinct and picked up an application and i applied before i turned 35 that year. I was called to take the test in September and by January i was in the Academy of 2007. Dr.C I was in for a rude awakening!!!!!

Dr.C
Yes i can imagine what a change that must have been. What are the qualifications to become a police officer?

Bridgette Thompson
Qualifications to become a police officer other than having a clean background. You must take a city test, have at least 60 college credits or military background and apply before age 35 yrs of age. Must be successful in the six months of academy training.

Dr.C
Thanks for that information Bridgette. As it pertains to your job, and i know you are not privileged to share certain information but, have you ever feared for your life?

Bridgette Thompson
Yes feared twice lol.. on a footpost and several shots fired two blocks away. Also during the labor day parade a block away, several shots fired and all i can see was a large crowd running towards me . I can remember this one lady with her little girl. I could see the fears in their eyes and that’s when i knew how important my job is.

Dr.C
No one should ever discount the hard work or the importance of the NYPD. Have you ever lost a coworker in the line of duty?

Bridgette Thompson
Yes on December 13, 2011. It’s difficult to lose a friend whether you are a cop or not. This particular friend was such a sweet heart and a great cop he never treated me like a rookie. He was a total gentleman and had such great class.
You asked about fear, every time you hear a cop get shot there is a knot tied in your stomach, you get nervous and start to pray because he is your colleague and no matter where they are it will affect you. Every one of us at the end of our day are expected to go home to our families.

Dr.C
Are your family fearful of the challenges of the job?

Bridgette Thompson
Yes my family and friends got worried at times, and that’s normal. Once they hear that a cop is shot, my phone start ringing off the hook..lol. I tried to reach out to them first to let them know that i am OK. The challenges are unexpected and you just have to maintain a level of respect and professionalism. Working in an environment such as this is unpredictable.

Dr.C
How do you balance family and the job?

Bridgette Thompson
Well balancing family and job hmmm.. i have 2 grown sons and thank god no grand babies yet so for now i am enjoying life.

Dr.C
What’s your greatest weakness and strength?

Bridgette Thompson
I think my greatest weakness is that i am very emotional and often taken advantage of. luckily i have friends and family that often put me in check lol.
Strength, i always learned from my negative actions and make them positive.

Dr.C
Excellent and positive attitude my friend. What is your greatest failure, and what did you learn from it?

Bridgette Thompson
My greatest failure ? Dr.C that’s a hard question. I think that i could have contributed more to the community. Sometimes the outcome is not as we would hope but we just have to trust in our system of Justice. Every experience of failure is an opportunity for self improvement and growth.
Honestly, i failed a lot .lol, just called it that, but i always bounce back Dr.C, i always bounce back.

Dr.C
When were you most satisfied in your job?

Bridgette Thompson
My job is very rewarding contrary to popular opinions. But one of my experience of being satisfied was when a stranger walks up to me and say “thank you for protecting us”. That, warms my heart.

Dr.C
Which cop show on tv truly represents your job? Why?

Bridgette Thompson
Well a cop show is scripted they know how it ends. In our line of work we pray it ends well.
Law and order i think is a little accurate.

Dr.C
What motivates you?

Bridgette Thompson
What motivates me? Being alive everyday, watching my sister beat ovarian cancer. She motivates me because she still got up and smiled everyday. She still mothered her kids and still a sister and daughter to many. I love her so much because of her strength and the will to live…….(give me a moment Dr.C)…

Dr.C
Take your time………………………..
Who is your role model?

Bridgette Thompson
Role model, mommy dearest, my side kick. She surely been there for me through the worst and the good. Her strength and knowledge pulled me through. I wish i am at least 80% to my kids as she has been to me.

Dr.C
If you were a super hero what would your powers be? Why?

Bridgette Thompson
Lol super hero you had me searching for a super hero..lol. Well Professor Xavier from XMEN. He had the ability to read minds. I wish i could read some people minds to let them know it’s going to be ok you don’t have to put on a poker face..lol. Or even know so i could protect myself from the bad guys lol. But do i want to know every thoughts? maybe not! lol.

Dr.C
Do police officers really like donut?

Bridgette Thompson
Dr.C, don’t let me knock u out! lol back in the days when the cops that worked the midnight, they were no 24hr restaurants and bodegas so Dunkin Donut was the spot for coffee. Yes we are committed to Dunkin Donut because they are everywhere and accessible. I like me some Dunkin! i am not lying, i get me a jelly one every now and then. Lol.
